I was unsurprised to see Billy Mitchell, the long-suffering petty criminal in EastEnders, limbering up in an eye-wateringly lemon tracksuit this week as he eyed a job as a 2012 London Olympics volunteer.
“I’m an eastender born and bred so I’m just the type of geezer they should be getting to do it,” Mitchell told a few punters in the Queen Vic (I am paraphrasing of course).
That’s a valid argument, but that is not why I was unsurprised by this new plot line.
As I have reported before and as the Daily Mail has reported, Sir Robin Wales and Newham council are lobbying hard for the BBC to include the Olympic Park in the programme’s famous opening and closing credits.
At a recent presentation Clive Dutton, Newham’s executive director for regeneration, confirmed that Sir Robin was still lobbying for the Beeb to change its mind.
Apparently the Beeb has said it would be “too expensive” but has promised instead more Olympics stories – enter Billy Mitchell stage left in his lemon tracksuit. I reckon the tracksuit alone was more expensive than adding a picture of the stadium to the opening credits, but what do I know ….
