Television Centre and Olympics update: “All options considered”

Listening into the BBC’s press briefing on its sale of Television Centre just now.

A good question being asked is where will the BBC film many of its London-based programmes currently filmed at Television Centre if the studio space is redeveloped as residential or something else?

The Beeb already films many programmes at other locations where it pays to rent space such as Zingzillas at Pinewood. Clearly it will be filming a lot in other locations where it owns studio space such as Salford and Cardiff.

But Chris Kane, heading the property department at the BBC, is making it clear there is an opportunity here for other areas to come forward and provide it with studio space in the capital. “We are considering all options,” he said. All quite interesting for the Olympics broadcast centre …

The Beeb has also confirmed that it is reviewing all of its existing property portfolio as it seeks a furher 20% of cost reductions, and that could potentially see it leave White City entirely.
